Steger Words

The Earth Will Swallow You

down the tree lined road
where the pavement ends
and the salty green begins
a captain lays in solitude
he was a settler of this old town
his story long forgotten
all that's left is a stone
wisteria wrapping around it
as if vines alone could sail him home
so quick we are to pass blindly by the deceased
playing childhood games of holding our breath
ignoring the way the sea plundered him to death
centuries have gone by
times have surely changed
there is no denying though
that one infallible truth
the earth in all her might
will someday simply swallow you
